SPEER to Officially Launch Austin 2030 District to Improve Building Performance

Public/private partnership seeking participants help buildings in downtown area achieve 50 percent reduction in energy and water use as well as transportation CO2 emissions by 2030  

 Austin, Texas, January 5  – The South-central Partnership for Energy Efficiency as a Resource (SPEER), a non-profit regional energy efficiency organization working to accelerate adoption of advanced building systems and energy efficient products, services, and technologies in Texas and Oklahoma, announced it will formally launch its Austin 2030 District January 19. The Austin 2030 District is the third of its kind supported by SPEER in the state of Texas and joins fellow projects in Dallas and San Antonio.

As part of the launch, the District is seeking local property owners and managers, local businesses, local government, utilities, and community stakeholders to join the initiative. Those interested in learning more are invited to attend a launch event from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 19 at the JW Marriott’s Brazos Room.

“In establishing the initiative in Austin, we hope to bring together local efforts to benchmark, develop, and implement creative strategies for measuring progress,” said Karen Blaney, Director of the Austin 2030 District. “At this event, we will be talking about the benefits of participating in this group and how to join the 24 founding members, representing 5.6 million square feet.”

Intended to keep Austin competitive and ensure a resilient, vibrant city in 2030, local businesses have the potential to transform the city’s urban core by supporting each other in their efforts to reduce waste and increase building performance through its no-nonsense business case for efficient operations. This will drive innovation through collaboration as well as leverage shared resources so that business leaders can reduce the downtown business district’s energy use, water use and greenhouse gas emissions – all while stimulating economic growth and delivering bottom-line benefits.
